Puerto Maldonado is in the tropical Amazon Basin and is the main department of Madre de Dios in Peru, located in the junction of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios Rivers. From here you can travel by motorboat to many Amazon Lodges 30 to 45 minutes away or further into the Tambopata National Reserve. Fly from Lima and Cusco or travel by bus to Puerto Maldonado.

Tambopata National Reserve

The Tambopata National Reserve has many different habitats, including lowland Amazon rainforest, riverine forest, and oxbow lakes. It’s crossed by three rivers: the Malinowski, the Tambopata, and the Madre de Dios rivers.

The biodiverse reserve is protected and secluded in its natural habitat. This area of the jungle has over 1,000 species of butterflies, 100 species of mammals, around 600 species of birds, and hundreds of species of trees and plants. The Reserve and the surrounding area is home to the Ese Eja People, many indigenous families still make their homes in the buffer zone of the Reserve itself. Enjoy a nature stay at the Tambopata Research Center Lodge in comfort.

Manu

Manu National Park was designated a biosphere reserve in 1977 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1988. It is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world.

Manu is divided in 3 parts; The National Park, Reserved Zone and Cultural Zone.

It has a world record number of amphibians and reptiles to include pumas, jaguars, large otters, tapirs, immense species of birds and insects, etc. Numerous species of flowering plants and many indigenous tribes thrive here. There are only 8 licensed travel agencies to take you into the Manu reserve zone and a permit is required. Travel by road, boat or fly into Puerto Maldonado and drive to Manu.
